Music examinations are usually taken as part of a prolonged course of regular instrumental lessons with a tutor.In order to formally assess the progress of a student there are 8 progressive grades of practical exam and 8 of theory of music.Both London College and Trinity Guildhall offer introductory exams in the form of Steps 1 and 2 and Initial respectively.
To progress beyond grade 5 the instrumental or vocal candidate must have attained a pass in grade 5 theory.Theory exams take place at a local centre on a specified date during the exam sessions.
After grade 8 there are diplomas which may be taken in teaching, directing,composition and performance, offering a professional qualification equivalent to university courses.
In the UK there are three principal music examination boards, namely;

In the practical exam, which usually takes place at a local centre, the candidate will be required to perform pieces from a set syllabus together with scales and arpeggios (or an alternative technical study ). There will be a piece of sight reading which the candidate is asked to play without having seen it before and there are aural tests to assess the candidate's sense of pitch and rhythm along with recognition of style and form.Questions may also be asked based on the music performed.
A very useful free booklet for teachers, parents and anyone interested in taking music examinations is available. "These music exams" a guide to ABRSM exams for
