Concise History of 20th Century Music

The author of this book, Graham Hearn has given us a concise yet comprehensive look at 20th century music and demonstrated where composers have pushed boundaries and shown great leaps of imagination to create what is possibly the most extraordinary musical period so far.

The Cambridge History of Twentieth-Century Music (The Cambridge History of Music)

Monitoring the development of music through the 20th century, yet written in the 21st this book follows the break up of the European art tradition and its establishment as one among many at the end of the century. Although the focus is on western music its international authorship means that we see a wide variety of approaches to musical history during this period. The main aim of the book is to see developments in music within the context of social, idealogical and technical change and to understand that the way music is received and consumed has an important and integral part to play in its history.

The Companion to 20th-Century Music

This book defines the various styles of music to develop within the twentieth century such as atonality, neo-classicism.nationalism, serialism, jazz, computer music, minimalism, electronic music, and folk music. The author, Norman Lebrecht assesses composers according to their merit and not their fame and his style is an entertaining narrative and eminently readable one.
