Music examinations are usually taken as part of a prolonged course of regular instrumental lessons with a tutor.In order to formally assess the progress of a student there are 8 progressive grades of practical exam and 8 of theory of music.The Associated Board,London College and Trinity Guildhall offer introductory exams in the form of a Prep Test, Steps 1 and 2 and Initial respectively.
To progress beyond grade 5 the instrumental or vocal candidate must have attained a pass in grade 5 theory.Theory exams take place at a local centre on a specified date during the exam sessions.
After grade 8 there are diplomas which may be taken in teaching, directing,composition and performance, offering a professional qualification equivalent to university courses.
