The Jazz exam is comprised of 4 sections;

3 Pieces, one from the Blues list, one from the Standards list and one from the Contemporary list. All contain improvisation sections.

Scales, arpeggios and broken chords usinf common jazz patterns

Aural tests to assess all round musical awareness

Quick Study, playing at sight or by ear and giving an impeovised response.

PIECES

In each grade book you will find 15 tunes, 5 in each list

BLUES&ROOTS ---- tunes based on 12 bar or other bar length blues including African-American spirituals, New Orleans blues and roots music from other continents.

STANDARDS-----includes Tin Pan Alley and Broadway tunes in the form of swing, bebop, hard bop or other established styles.

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ----from the early 70s including Fusion,Rock,Folk and contemporary music from around the world. Some of these pieces have been specially commissioned for the ABRSM jazz exams.

JAZZ SCALES ---organised progressively these scales, arpeggios and broken chords are designed to develop technical control of the instrument, at the same time familiarising the student with common patterns,roots and key centres, enabling a wider choice of improvisational ideas.

JAZZ AURAL TESTS--- solo jazz players have to be aware of the rhythmic and harmonic framework in which they improvise and these tests are designed to aid that awareness.

QUICK STUDY----playing jazz depends on the ability to assimilate neww material quickly by ear as well as by sight and these quick studies will help you to develop these skills by playing short phrases and then improvising an answering phrase. In the exam you have the choice of playing from sight or by ear.
