The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music has a structured progressive Music Theory examination system and publishes work books, text books and past papers together with model answers to assist the learning process. GRADE I

Includes note and rest values, simple time signatures, bar lines and note grouping,the stave and clefs,accidentals, major scales,root postition triads and key signs up to two sharps and one flat,terms, signs and articulation marks.

This excellent series has been revised for Grades 1 to 5 and new covers have been extended to Grade 8 level. Using these workbooks is the best way to prepare for your theory exam.These books provide a clear explanation of music notation using straightforward language and contain many worked examples and practice exercises. There are defintions of important words and concepts pertaining to the graded level of each book and the final chapter has specimen exam questions for you to work through. Apart from supporting the ABRSM theory syllabus these workbooks provide an excellent resource for anyone wishing to develop their general music knowledge and skills.

ABRSM THEORY GRADE I PAST PAPERS 2004 - 2010

 

GRADE 2

Includes knowledge from grade one plus triplets, composing a 4 bar rhythm, up to 2 ledger line extensions, construction of a minor scale,major keys up to 3 sharps and 3 flats plus minor keys up to 1 sharp or flat,intervals by number only and more terms and signs.

ABRSM THEORY GRADE 2 PAST PAPERS 2004 - 2010

 

GRADE 3

Includes knowledge from preceding grades plus compound time signatures and grouping of notes and rests, the demisemiquaver and equivalent rest,extension of stave to beyond two ledger lines,octave transposition between treble and bass,scales keys and tonic triads of major and both types of minor up to 4 sharps or flats, degrees of the scale and intervals above the tonic using number and type,more terms and signs, phrase structure in music.

   

GRADE 4

Includes knowledge from preceding grades plus all simple and compound time signs and grouping of notes and rests, the breve,double dots on notes and rests, duplets, composition of a 4 bar rhythm or rhythm to given words, the alto clef,transposition to and from the alto clef,double sharps and flats and enharmonic equivalents,major and minor(both forms) scales in keys up to 5 sharps and flats,technical names for degrees of the scale,the chromatic scale,all diatonic intervals in all the keys for this grade,root position primary triads in keys up to 5 sharps and 5 flats,terms and signs, and recognition of ornaments, simple questions about standard orchestral instruments.

   

GRADE 5

Includes knowledge from preceding grades plus irregular time signatures, grouping of notes and rests,the Tenor Clef,with transposition between any of the 4 clefs,open score,scales and keys up to 6sharps and flats,triads and their inversions,suitable chords for cadential progressions,composition for given instrument up to 8 bars,or composition of melody to given words,terms,signs and ornaments,orchestral instruments and their clefs, questions designed to test the candidate’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge to actual music.

   

GRADE 6

Includes knowledge from grades 1 - 5 plus the use of root position,first and second inversion chords on any degree of the major or minor scale, the dominant seventh and its inversions, and the supertonic seventh in root position and first inversion. The figured bass,harmonisation,modulation,cadences, ornaments and passing notes.Covers all styles of music.

 

   

GRADE 7

Includes all knowledge from grades 1 - 6 plus harmonic vocabulary,diatonic secondary sevenths and their inversions, the Neopolitan 6th, diminished sevenths and all figuring used by composers between 1620 and 1790(Baroque period).This bool includes some worked examples of typical exam questions as well as exercises for each type of question.

 

   

GRADE 8

Includes all knowledge from grades 1 -7 plus the continuation of a Baroque trio sonate for 2 treble instruments and basso continuo, the completion of a keyboard passage and the continuation of a solo instrumental melody. There are questions on short extracts covering musical notation,ornaments,harmonic structure,phrase structure, style,performance directions, and instruments.
